Rochechouart, the meteorite country
A picturesque and once fortified town, Rochechouart stands amidst a verdant and unspoiled landscape with copses and open fields, age-old rocks and deep gorges. Rochechouart first sprang up in 965 and in feudal times expanded around its château which was rebuilt in the 15th century. In the Jurassic age, 214 million years ago, a meteor fell 4 kms west of Rochechouart leaving a crater 20 km in diameter, although now it is almost completely eroded and can no longer be distinguished.
